Edgar Bundy was a watercolourist who painted both historical and genre scenes. Primarily a self-taught artist, Bundy spent time as a boy in the studio of Alfred Stevens (1817-1875). He exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1881, and the Paris Salon from 1907 and in 1915 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy.

In this present watercolour we see Bundy's fluid technique and loosely handled brushstrokes. Bundy often favoured Dutch interior scenes, however, here he explores natural light and atmosphere. Bundy displays his virtuosity in the pitching perspective of the harbour path and the throng of the crowd, descending to the waters edge.
