Lot Essay

The sideboard, wreathed by 'Venus' palm-enriched pearls and enriched with poetic 'Apollo' sunflowers, displays a festive veil-draped tablet, with 'Ceres' cornucopiae conjoined with an ivy-wreathed and flower-filled ewer evoking the Roman concept voiced by the comic dramatist Terence: Sine Baccho et Cerere friget Venus (The Eunuch, 161 BC). This pattern of elliptic bowed 'Sideboard' top featured in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 29. The 1788 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster features a related table, enriched with veil-drapery, sunflowers, vine-festoons and a tablet celebrating the harvest deity, Ceres (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 90).
