Lot Essay

The hinged top with its armorial as well as lozenge- and auricular-form inlay in richly figured walnut suggests a Brunswick origin. A related desk, made for Duke Anton-Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, is inlaid with the date 1694 and now in the Kunstgewerbe Museum Berlin. Giles Ellwood illustrates related desks from Brunswick in 'Three Brunswick Desks', Furniture History, vol. XXXV, 1999, pp.42-50.
