SUPERB CLARETS CONSIGNED DIRECTLY FROM CHATEAU LEOVILLE-BARTON, CHATEAU LA FLEUR PETRUS, CHATEAU MAGDELAINE AND CHATEAU MONTROSE
Introducing the 2001 Vintage
In the vineyards, three moments were crucial to the success of this vintage. The flowering went through smoothly, meaning that all grapes on a bunch could reach maturity together. August was hot, speeding the ripening process. And September was dry, with luminous skies, bringing grapes slowly to full ripeness. Superb Merlots and Cabernets were picked, after a long hang-time, in one of the latest of recent vintages.
So much brouhaha had accompanied the 2000 Millennium vintage that 2001s were rather over-looked. Prices had to come out at lower levels, to attract interest; today they look very reasonable. Now that the wines have been in bottle for over a year, they merit a proper assessment. A.H.
CHATEAU MONTROSE

Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 65 of the plantings, Merlot 25 Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot the balance. Since the 1989 vintage, the property has consistently been making one of the most classic, long-living, perfectly structured wines of all Bordeaux. The Charmolüe family has owned it since 1896.
