Lot Essay

This type of chair, popularly known as a 'Cockpen chair' is likely to have been designed by James Hamilton from the Edinburgh firm of Young and Trotter. In a letter of 1774 he referred to 'Chinese Chairs', and examples survive in the possession of families known to have bought carpets, wallpapers etc from Young and Trotter. See Francis Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers, The Furniture History Society, Maney, 1983.
