LYLY, John (1554?-1606). Euphues. The Anatomy of Wit. London: [Humphrey Lownes] for William Leake, 1613. [Bound with:] Euphues and His England. Containing his voiage and adventures. London: [by W. Hall?] for William Leake, 1609.

2 works in one volume, 4° (183 x 132mm). Black letter. (First work with title soiled, wormtrack from title to B4, affecting a few letters on A2v, S2v of sequel stained, both works dust-soiled, some headlines shaved, other marginal stains, a few corners torn away.) 17th-century calf, plain spine with raised bands (extremities rubbed and chipped).

Fifteenth edition of the Anatomy of Wit, first published in 1578; fourteenth edition of Euphues and His England, first published in 1580. These were the last editions of the two parts to be published separately. The separately-published sequel is much rarer on the market; ABPC records only 3 copies (one imperfect) of any edition sold since 1975. Lyly's very popular work has remained famous for its excessive use of antithesis and other peculiarities of style, giving rise to the word 'Euphuism'. STC 17063 & 17079.
