MAGENS, Nicolaus (d. 1764). An Essay on Insurances. London: J. Haberkorn, 1755.
2 volumes, 4° (243 x 188mm). Appendix to Volume I bound in at end. (A little spotting and light marginal soiling, a few leaves lightly browned at beginning and end.) Contemporary gilt-ruled speckled calf (some scuffing to covers, spine chipped at head and foot, joints partially split). Provenance: John Clevland (c. 1707-1763) (printed booklabel) -- by descent to the present owners.
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Magens' Essay on Insurances was first published in Hamburg in 1753. A successful German merchant resident in London, Magens was the author of the Universal Merchant, to which Adam Smith refers in footnotes to The Wealth of Nations. His Essay on Insurances includes observations on contemporary cases, the risks to navigation in wartime, and 'the Nature of the various Kinds of Insurance practised by the different Commercial States of Europe'.
