MÜNSTER, Sebastian and Hans HOLBEIN. Typus Cosmographicus Universalis. Basel: [1532 or later]. Woodcut map of the world on two sheets, overall 390 x 580mm. (Light staining to margins and corners.)
A large and attractive woodcut map of the world, taken from Huttich and Grynaeus's Novus Orbis Regionum first published in Basel in 1532. The map was also included in the 1537 and 1555 editions of the same work with minor variations. Geographically the map is a little antiquated but it is enlivened by the decoration of the borders. Although Münster composed the map, it is most likely that Hans Holbein the younger decorated the margins since he was working with several Basel publishers at this time. Shirley argues that the early issues of this map have the names of the continents in large capitals, as in this example. Shirley Mapping of the World 67; Nordenskiold pp. 105-106; Sabin 34100.
