MÜLLER, Otto Frederik (1730-1784). Zoologia Danica. Copenhagen: N. Moller, [vol.IV by N. Christensen], 1788-1806.

4 volumes in one, 2° (382 x 245mm). Titles with engraved vignettes, 160 hand-coloured engraved plates, by C. F. Müller and I. C. Frederich in volumes I and II, by P. C. Abildgaard in volume III, by P. C. Abildgaard, M. Vahl, J. S. Holten and J. Rathke in volume IV. (Text to vols II and III in facsimile.) Later 19th-century green half calf (lightly rubbed). Provenance: J. R. MacIntosh (inscription) -- Johann Hus Bibliotek (etched bookplate).

The foremost Danish naturalist of the Linnean period, Müller was gifted with powers of observation which enabled him to establish the classification of several groups of animals completely disregarded by Linnaeus. His Zoologia Danica was 'the first manual on this topic and was for many years the most comprehensive. It was planned as the beginning of a large illustrated fauna, but only one volume appeared before his death in 1784' (DSB, pp. 575-576). This folio edition was produced by his brother and others, the last volume published in 1806 being prepared by his colleague Peter Christian Abildgaard, founder of the veterinary school in Copenhagen. Anker 348; Nissen ZBI 2932.
