A LOUIS XVI ENAMELLED VARI-COLOUR GOLD CARNET-DE-BAL
Paris, 1774-1780, with the discharge mark of Jean-Baptiste Fouache 1774-1780, other marks rubbed
Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with slightly arched top, of oblong section, decorated overall with hatched opaque pink enamel simulating veined marble, within a matted gold border applied with stylized acanthus, the lid applied with pierced gold motto SOUVENIR D'AMITIE within reeded rose-set border, the obverse of the base inset with an oval enamel plaque painted with Diogenes and Alexander the Great, within a plain gold frame with ribbon-tie surmount and laurel below, the reverse with a similarly framed glazed pierced foliate gold monogram 'DM' on an oval slightly raised translucent green guilloché foil; both sides of cover and base with two gold columns hung with swags in two-colour gold; gold-capped pencil and gold riveted three-leaved tablets inside; with green shagreen case
