Details
OPERA ARIAS (Rome, Venice and Naples C1720 - 1740).

An interesting collection of rare arias in contemporary manuscript in various scribal hands, most extracted from unnamed operas performed in Italy in the 1720s and 1730s.

Oblong 4to, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering (a little rubbed and chipped, small scuffs on lower board, some splitting on hinges and joints, 1 double leaf detached).

THE COLLECTION INCLUDES VERY RARE EXAMPLES OF MUSIC BY GIOVANNI FISCHETTI AND MICHELE CABALLONE

The most popular airs of the current operas were often collected as souvenirs, especially by English tourists. The arias in this collection comprise: six by J.A. Hasse "Il Sassone" (1699-1785) including two, one each written for the castrati Caffarelli and Carestini - the latter perhaps from Attalo re di Bittinia (Naples 1728); three by Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) including one probably from Catone in Utica (Venice 1729) and another probably from Il Trionfo di Camilla (Rome 1726); three by Domenico Sarro (1679-1744) including one from Didone (Venice 1724); one by Nicolo Porpora (1686-1768) probably from Mitridate (Rome 1730); one by Michelle Caballone (1692-1740) probably from the lost score of L'Adone, re di Cipro (Rome 1731); one by Giovanni Battista Costanzi (1704-1778) probably from Carlo Magno (Rome 1729); three anonymous arias and one duet by Giovanni Fischetti (1672-1743) from a lost score. (Grove, Sartori and F. Millner).
