MASSENET'S OWN CORRECTIONS TO THE MISE EN SCèNE OF WERTHER. Massenet's extensive annotations in eight places, typically signed with initials, are predominantly alterations of the blocking, including Charlotte's crossing of the stage at the opening of Act IV; in some places he refers to a further corrected version by 'Mle S.' [possibly Sybil Sanderson]. One annotation gives detailed instructions on lighting ('le rayon de lune doit être dévisé dès le 1er instant sur l'endroit où Charlotte passera & s'arrêtera'). A note at the close of Act IV scene 1 specifying a production detail for the Opéra Comique ('A l'Opéra Comique, Charlotte dit à l'exterieur: Werther! Werther! et elle n'entre brusquement que sur les mots: Rien! ...') is annotated simply 'bon J.M.'.

Massenet's Goethe-inspired opera, Werther, was in fact turned down by the Opéra Comique, and had its première in Vienna in 1892, following the success of Manon at the Hofoper.
