VERDI, Giuseppe. Two autograph letters signed to Giulio Ricordi, Sant'Agata and Genoa, 16 November and 30 December 1888, 3 pages, 8vo, on bifolia; one envelope.
A written protest, and recommending an 'enemy'. In November, Verdi complains that if Ricordi is not going to write in protest against an unnamed adversary, he certainly is, when the time comes: 'But at least you could have said that I did not approve'. They will see each other in Milan -- 'a touch of rheumatism in my right arm prevents me writing at length'. At the end of the year he writes of pleasure at a success for Ricordi -- 'in the end it is all over and Amen'. He finds himself in the strange position of having to recommend a musical opponent: 'Una persona amica mi prega di raccomandarvi un mio nemico (nemico musicale ... nient' altro). E questo è Alberti Ludovico', a man who has written in Ricordi's Gazetta musicale di Milano on 'Radical reform at the Conservatorio etc' -- to which Verdi responds drily that 'I too might have a radical reform to suggest?!!'. But Alberti asks if he might be able to obtain at the Gazzetta a 'fixed, stable, well-paid etc etc job', and Verdi seconds his request. (2)
