Sceptre en obsidienne noire comme jais et semi-translucide dont la hampe et le corps de section fine ont été taillés avec soin en vue de représenter de profil une évocation figurée d'un dignitaire qui pourrait être le Dieu K ou K'awiil (qui est associé à la foudre), debout les pieds joints, aux bras (?) tendus en avant, le visage traité comme un portait, la mâchoire en avant, et le nez aquilin, les yeux légèrement enfoncés et surmonté d'une coiffure distincte et large en forme de croissant aux bordures dentelées et retombant en arrière.

MAYAN CEREMONIAL OBSIDIAN SCEPTER
LATE CLASSIC, CA. A. D. 550-950

The handle and shaft of thick section, carefully chipped to represent the profile figure of a dignitary reminiscent of the God K or K'awiil, associated with lightning, standing with feet together, arm(?) extended, the face, portrait-like, with jutting jaw and aquiline nose, the eye gently recessed and wearing a distinctive, sweeping crescentic headdress with serrated edge extending down the back; of jet black semi-translucent obsidian (volcanic glass).

Eccentric flints are unique to Mayan culture. Shaped by flaking chips of obsidian or chert, possibly with a bone tool, these labor-intensive works were the products of skilled flint knappers.
In contrast to the more common abstract flint and obsidian weapons, the examples with human profiles could represent dead ancestors. Thus, the Maya worked material they thought was created by a bolt of lightning into an object which embodied and channeled power emanating from the souls of the dead.

Les silex "excentriques" sont des objets dont la production est seulement connue chez les Mayas. Ces objets issus d'un labeur difficile et peut-être obtenue au moyen d'outils en os destinés à mettre en forme les éclats d'obsidienne étaient produits par d'habiles tailleurs de silex.
A la différence des objets abstraits en silex ou des armes en obsidienne, les productions représentant des profils humains pouvaient évoquer l'esprit des ancêtres disparus. Pour cette raison, les Mayas travaillaient un matériau qu'ils pensaient créé à partir d'un éclair pour le transformer en un objet censé incarner et concentrer le pouvoir issu de l'esprit des défunts.
