Edouard Adolphe Casimir Joseph Mortier, a farmer's son, became Captain of a batallion of volunteers in 1791, and Adjutant-General in 1793. After a number of successful campaigns he was created Marshal of the Empire in 1804. In 1807, after the battle of Friedland, he was created duc de Treviso, and in 1812 he served in the Russian campaign, but failed to carry out Napoleon's orders to blow up the Kremlin. He was present at Napoleon's abdication in 1814 and after the restoration of the Monarchy he was made Minister of War in 1834. He was killed by the bomb which Fieschi threw at the King on 28th July 1835.
