FIRST EDITION WITH GEORG PICTORIUS'S ANNOTATED REDACTION, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LAPIDARIES OF THE MIDDLE AGES. Marbode's book on the medical and magical properties of precious and semi-precious gems and stones was enormously influential. It was written between 1061 and 1081 and comprises 734 Latin hexameters describing sixty stones. Soon after the advent of printing, 14 various editions soon appeared. The work was translated into French, Irish, Provençal, Danish, Hebrew and Spanish. Sinkankis 4170; Thorndike I, p.775; Ward & Carozzi 1496.
