Chancery 2° (287 x 205mm). Gothic type, double column, full-page white-on-black woodcut on title, initials supplied in red. (Scattered small stains, some browning, a few wormholes in final quires, some headlines shaved.) German blindtooled pigskin over wooden boards, front cover with initials 'C. S. P.' and date 1578 (missing fore-edge clasps, rubbed). Provenance: early inscription erased from opening leaf -- Dietramszell, Bavaria, canons of St. Martin (title inscription; 'Frater Martinus ?Koler' at end).

The title woodcut depicting the author at his work with 4 separately cut roundels of the symbols of the Evangelists at the corners is the earliest example of a white-on-black design (cf. Hind, Introduction to a History of the Woodcut, p.196). On the date of this edition, see D.E.
