A MEISSEN TWO-HANDLED OCTAGONAL CUP AND SAUCER
CIRCA 1740, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK, INDISTINCT GILDER'S NUMERALS, DREHER'S ,, TO FOOTRIM OF CUP
Painted with purpurmalerei vignettes, one side of the cup with a figure on horseback bidding farewell to his family, the other with an encampment, each within elaborate purple-edged gilt cartouches with shaped and foliate panels of hatched ornament, with small insects near the loop handles, the interior with a gilt foliate vitruvian scroll border, the saucer with soldiers sacking a village, within a similar cartouche surrounded by three flower-sprays and a similar border (cup with wear to gilding of handles and border, saucer with areas of slight scratching and minute wear, extensive wear to both footrims)
