A diorama of the salvage of the barque Vizcaya of Bilbao by the steamer Lyons
Kenneth Britten (British, 20th century), circa 1985
the two ships, with their hulls built up in wood and with black painted topsides, and set in a modeled green sea. The Vizcaya in shambles and detailed with broken spars, coils of line, torn sails, four figures at the bow heaving in the tow line, lumber, chain, anchors, broken rigging, and the remnants of a ship adrift; with a life boat approaching modeled with ten men manning the oars, a tillerman, and a pilot all dressed in foulies; and the Lyons manoevering to stay clear of the Vizcaya and detailed with anchors, chain, bollards, capstan, anchor davits, masts, ladders, railings, paddle wheels, a pair of black funnels, boats on davits, skylights, coach houses, companionways, deck hatches, figures on deck and many other details. Displayed in a mahogany framed glass case with an inset brass plaque.
