The shaped hinged top profusely inlaid with a ribbon-tied basket laden with summer flowers, the reverse fitted with a mirror, above a drawer fitted with a sliding removable tray, the lockplate engraved L. Gradé, F. R. de la PAIX, N, 23, on slender cabriole legs each headed by a female mask and terminating in an acanthus-cast sabot

Specialising in porcelain-mounted and Boulle style furniture, Louis Gradé established his shop at 9, rue Castex in 1852, moving to larger premises at 23, rue de la Paix in 1856. The firm exhibited at the 1851, 1855 and 1867 Universal Exhibitions and in 1866 became known as Louis Gradé et Pelcot.
