Lot Essay

Made from the favoured woods of Yew and Elm, with a commodious seat, cabriole legs to the front and rear and an ornately fretted splat; this chair belongs to a known group of Windsors made in the mid 18th century. This group included both comb and hoop back chairs; this chair is a rare, but not unknown, example wherein the flattened outer vertical uprights usually found in the comb-backs are incorporated into the hoopback. This example is in particularly original condition and surface finish, and the differential in the curve of the cabriole between the front and rear legs was reserved for the 'best' chairs of this type, with more standard designs having straight turned rear legs.
