A Renaissance gilt octagonal watch case
Second half 16th Century
The later frosted gilt verge movement with profusely engraved and pierced cock and foot to the edge of the top plate, inscribed Johann Kuhlmann, originally with gut fusee, now with chain, pierced tulip pillars, the silver champlev/ae dial with Roman numerals and diamond half-hour divisions, inner lunar calendar ring, the centre field consisting of a gilt engraved and decorated disk with an aperture revealing the phases of the moon, a scratch mark on the rim indicating the date of the moon, outer silver calendar ring, date indicated on a revolving gilt ring with blued steel pointer, single blued steel decorative hand, the 16th Century gilt bronze case with decorative balustrade rim, the back pierced and engraved with scroll and floral patterns, the hinged front cover pierced with Gothic design and a central religious motif with a Crucifix and the letters IHS, ring pendant, the bottom finial lacking
