An early Japanese brass and iron large yagura-dokei
Late 18th Century
The movement with rectangular iron posts to the four corners, the sides and rear panels of wrap-around form with acid-blistered decoration, similarly decorated dial plate with stationary chapter ring painted with Japanese chapters on a red ground with an outer circle of animalier hours exquisitely painted in gold and shaded relief, the centre disc with single pierced brass hand and alarm-set pin secured to a revolving disc decorated with lacquered mother-of-pearl, the substantial two-train iron movement with double foliot to the verge escapement, the strike train with countwheel with unusual painted decoration planted on the rear steel strut and with strike on the large bell above the plates
