Lot Essay

This cabinet or window pier 'commode' is designed in the early 19th century 'antique' manner with reeded pilasters and foliate carved panel corners. The design recalls a pair of side cabinets which Gillows provided under the direction of the architect Lewis Wyatt (d. 1853) for Thomas Langford-Brooke (d. 1815), Mere Hall, Knutsford, Cheshire. The latter was sold by Mrs Helen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 188 and latterly sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 25 November 2004, lot 184. Gillows had a long-standing association with the Wyatt family of architects, Mere being rebuilt circa 1813 to designs by Samuel Wyatt, reworked by his nephew, Lewis Wyatt, with Gillows providing the furniture.
