Lot Essay

The Grecian scrolled chairs, with their palm-flowered backs and Egyptian-reed enrichments, reflect the French antique fashion introduced by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d. 1842) through his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (see armchairs pl. LIX).

A variety of related chair patterns feature in the early 19th century dining-room sketches surviving in the archives of the firm of Gillows of London and Lancaster, and their form evolved in particular from the 'Handsome Mahogany Chairs' listed in an 1813 Memorandum drawn up by Richard Gillow and supplied by Messrs G. and R. Gillow & Co. under Lewis Wyatt's direction for William, 2nd Baron Bolton (d. 1850) at Hackwood, Hampshire. The drawings are preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Lancaster City Art Gallery; the Bolton chairs were sold Christie's Hackwood house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lot 158).

The chairs, upholstered in purple leather, were supplied for the dining-room at Glynllifon, Caernarvonshire, and invoiced by Gillow and Co. in June 1823, as:- '24 mahogany chairs, carved frames, stuffed back and seats in purple Morocco @ £5.10.0. £132.0.
