The circular silvered signed with Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys hands, in a rectangular case with sunk spandrels and stepped top with pine-cone finial, the twin fusee movement with anchor escapement and strike on a bell, similarly signed backplate, the sides with carrying-handles above trellis-pierced brass bound frets to the sides, on a moulded plinth with ball feet, signed 'James McCabe ROYAL EXCHANGE. London. 2292.', the reverse of the movement similarly inscribed, the case stamped '2292'

Lot Essay

A clock of this model, with movement by Thwaites & Reed (fl. 1808-40) , was lent by the India Office to the Bethnal Green Museum's 1896 Exhibition, no. 372 (J. Hardy, India Office Furniture, London, 1982, fig. 92). The firm of James McCabe (d. 1811) was continued under the same name by his sons.
