After leaving the Royal Military Academy, he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery where he won the Military Cross during the retreat to St. Valery in 1940. Following capture shortly after, Weldon spent time in German prisoner of war camps until 1945, from which he managed to escape from three times. Eventually imprisoned in the infamous Colditz, here he continued his escape attempts. During one such attempt, Weldon was awarded a military MBE for turning back to rescue a comrade who was trapped in the escape tunnel. Following the war, Weldon had the potential to achieve even greater military success, however conflicts with superior officers surrounding his equestrian activities, curtailed his career in the armed forces. Incredibly, Weldon'’s second career was even more successful than his first with which he achieved international stardom. In 1951, Weldon rode for the first time in a three-day event at Badminton, which he and his horse, Liza Mandy, won. Two years later in 1953, Weldon helped Great Britain win the European Championship at Badminton. This was to be the start of four consecutive wins in this event in team eventing. Individually too, Weldon was a success. In 1955, he was European champion, and in 1956, as well as winning an individual Bronze medal at the equestrian Olympics in Stockholm, he also captained Great Britain to a Gold medal. All of his successes were achieved on the redoubtable 'Kilbarry', his most famous horse. When asked by the Duke of Beaufort in 1964 to redesign the course at Badminton, it was to be the start of a long and fruitful collaboration and by 1966, Weldon had become the director of the horse trials. It was a position he held for the next 22 years, during which he consistently refined the course and consequently raised the standard for British horse riders, elevated the status of Badminton Horse Trials to the zenith of world eventing and in the process made the sport more commercially successful.
