The present figure was modelled after Watteau's painting of Pierrot, 1718-1719. Pierrot standing with his arms hanging by his sides wearing a simple costume with exaggerated long sleeves capturing his simple and vulnerable character. For a further discussion and a similar German hard-paste porcelain example of Pierrot see Meredith Chilton Harlequin Unmasked, New Haven and London 2001, pages 100-103.
