PAILLET, Eugène (1829-1901) -- Henri BÉRALDI (1849-1931). Bibliothèque d'un bibliophile 1865-1885. Lille: L. Danel, 1885.

8o (200 x 128 mm). Contemporary (American?) half tree calf, marbled boards, t.e.g., others uncut, original wrappers bound in (some rubbing to spine and edges, corners worn). Provenance: Irwin Laughlin (bookplate); J.R. Abbey (bookplate).

Eugène Paillet was one of the leading book collectors in mid-nineteenth century Paris, who in his library presided over a kind of bibliophilic salon. Béraldi was one of its members and compiled this catalogue of Paillet's collection, interspersing it with amusing anecdotes. To the surprise of the Parisian book world, though, Paillet sold his collection in 1887 to the bookdealer Damascène Morgand for the 700,000 frs. Morgand, using Béraldi's descriptions, offered it in his Bulletin No. 20 in 1887. Only a small number of copies of this catalogue were printed on Hollande paper for the Société des Amis du Livre; a manuscript notation on the half-title designates this copy number 279. It is also signed by Béraldi.
