HOYM, Karl Heinrich Graf von (1694-1736) -- Gabriel MARTIN. Catalogus librorum bibliothecae illustrissimi viri Caroli Henrici Comitis de Hoym... Paris: Gabriel & Claude Martin, 1738.
8o (204 x 122 mm). (Some occasional light spotting, some minor cropping to manuscripts notations in margins.) Contemporary French mottled brown calf, spine gilt, red morocco spine label (worn, with a few small repairs).
AN UNUSUAL COPY, WITH ALL ESTIMATES AND PRICES REALIZED IN OPPOSTITE MARGINS, with some manuscript notations. Hoym's library was entirely in the French taste and included manuscripts, prints, maps, and fine bindings. He had his books bound by the foremost French binders, including Boyet, Girou, and Padeloup le Jeune. When Hoym was sentenced to life in prison after a series of false charges were brought against him, he committed suicide, and his library was then sold to benefit his heirs. In Martin's preface, he proposed to sell the collection en bloc and then by auction if no buyer was found before 1 April. In order to establish the total value of the library for the en bloc sale, Martin created estimates for each lot. Brunet III:1497; North 46.
