BONNIER D'ALCO, Ange-Elisabeth-Louis-Antoine (1750-1799) -- Catalogue des livres rares, singuliers et très-bien conditionés de feu le C. Bonnier. Paris: Stoupe for Guillaume Debure, An VIII (1800).

8o (197 x 123 mm). Contemporary French crimson straight-grained morocco gilt, round sides a diamond-and-chain roll between two gilt fillets, smooth spine divided into six compartments, the second bearing the title, in the others a large sunburst, inner gilt lozange-and-oval roll depicting emblems "de la Paix et des Arts," edges gilt. Provenance: Philippe-Louis de Bordes de Fortage (bookplate); Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate; his sale, part III, Parke-Bernet, 29 October 1951, lot 1228); Francis Kettaneh (bookplate).

Sale catalogue of the library of Bonnier d'Alco, an important figure in the French Revolution who was assassinated while head of the French delegation at the Congress of Rastatt by Austrian troops--a crime against international law which has had few equals, according to Hoefer, but perhaps committed by bandits hired by emigrés. A pencil note on front flyleaf states that this copy was probably lot 2651 in Talleyrand's sale; another hand states that it was in the Chasteignier sale of 17 April, 1902. PRICED in a contemporary hand. Dibdin, Bibliomania, 1811, p. 100; North 401; Blogie II, col. 22.
