BARBIER, Antoine-Alexandre (1765-1825) -- Catalogue d'une partie des livres de la bibliothèque de M***. Paris: Barrois l'aîné & Renou, 1823.
8o (199 x 118 mm). Interleaved. (Some prices cropped.) 20th-century half blue morocco, red lettering piece. Provenance: Antoine-Alaxandre Barbier (see below).
MOSTLY PRICED in a contemporary hand. THE FIRST, ANONYMOUS SALE CATALOGUE OF A PORTION OF THE LIBRARY OF BARBIER, bibliographer and librarian successively to the directoire, Napoleon I, Josephine, Marie-Louise, and Louis XVIII, until his unexplained dismissal in 1822, which may have necessitated the above sale. This copy apparently belonged to Barbier himself: on a letter with the printed heading "Reçu de M. Barbier la somme de... pour avoir..." is a list of items with their cost and sale prices (75.35 and 574.40 respectively). In the margins and on the blank interleavings are numerous notes and corrections; two buyers names are mentioned: J. Lardin and Boullée (also spelled Bouillot), in a different hand. The catalogue of this 1823 sale appears to be very uncommon: Brunet only mention his posthumous sale of 1828.
