THOU, Jacques-Auguste de (1553-1617) -- I. BOULIAU (1605-1694), J. QUESNEL and D. LEVESQUE. Catalogus Bibliothecae Thuanae. Hamburg: Christian Liebezeit, printed at Lauenburg, by Christian Albrecht Pfeiffer, 1704.
2 volumes, 8o (171 x 103 mm). Engraved frontispiece, by H. Westphalen after Leclerc's frontispiece of the 1679 edition, title printed in black and red. Engraved headpiece after Leclerc of the library Thuana. Contemporary sprinkled calf bindings, gilt fillets round sides, in corners a fleur-de-lys, surmounted by a crown, spine gilt with five raised bands and six compartments, morocco lettering pieces in second. Provenance Wm. Constable (bookplate).
A reprint of the 1679 edition (see lot 422), but, as the preface claims, with some corrections, especially to the German books and to the index. "The most celebrated and frequently consulted seventeenth-century private library catalogue. The library was largely formed by Jacques Auguste de Thou. Although the purpose of its publication was the sale of the De Thou library, which took place in 1681, its continued usefulness called for a reprint in 1704" (see Breslauer & Folter 76).
