LAUTENSACK, Friedrich Gregor -- H.J. BYTENMEISTER (1698-1746). Catalogus Bibliothecae Lautensackiana raritate, selectu, ligatura librorum splendissimae... editus ab Henrico Johanne Bytemeister... Helmstadt: Joh. Drimborn, 1737, sale Celle, 1 August 1737.
8o (171 x 117 mm). (A1 cancelled.) Original wrappers, uncut. Provenance: Negendanck (contemporary signature on title); Bibliothek der Mecklenburgische Ritter- und Landschaft (early ink stamp on verso of title).
An early auction catalogue containing 4,061 lots. Loh lists only 4 other auctions held at Celle before 1731. The catalogue is divided into three parts: Theology, Medicine, and Miscellaneous works; Philosophy; and Jurisprudence. There is a 128-column index of authors, anonyma and countries mentioned in the descriptions. The owner of this library, of which more than one third consisted of works on law, was no doubt the author on legal subjects, Friedrich Gregor Lautensack, although the catalogue lists only one dissertation by him (in lot 451) - the others were probably retained by his family (the sale took place in his house). BMC and the Greifswald University Catalogue of 1775 list two more works by him. Bytemeister, a native of Celle, became professor of theology in Helmstedt; Jöcher lists the above catalogue among his works. Bogeng, vol. III, p. 126; BMC (under Bytemeister); neither editor nor collector is listed by Blogie, Pollard & Ehrman, ADB or NDB.
