Preamissa praefatio Io. Guilelmi de Berger. Wittenberg: Printed by Ehraim Gottlob Eichsfeld [Vol. II:] Hackius, no date [1740].
2 volumes in one, 8o (163 x 99 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine ink lettered. Provenance: Johann Carl Conrad Oelrich (1722-99), historian and diplomat, ("Bibliotheca Oelrichsiana," oval library stamp on title verso).
An impressive collection with 12,469 lots, the auction comprises the libraries of the German scholars Johann Wilhelm Hoffmann who inherited the library of his brother Christian. "Johann Wilhelm Hoffmann, professor of history and law at the University in Wittenberg... was a most profound expert of the 18th-century literature of political science" (ADB). His brother was a professor of constitutional law in Frankfurt/Oder. The author of the introduction Berger, a professor of rhetoric in Wittenberg, was presumably also in charge of cataloguing and selling the collection, which was offered complete, in parts, or lot by lot to buyers within a six-month period. See Taylor, pp. 245-46.
