CHARRON, Jean-Jacques, Marquess de Ménars (1643-1718) -- Bibliotheca Menarsiana, ou catalogue de la bibliothèque de feu Messire Jean Jacques Charron... The Hague: Abraham De Hondt, 1720.
8o (168 x 108 mm). (Some light browning and pale spotting to text.) Contemporary calf gilt (some splitting to joints). Provenance: obscure institutional stamp on title-page.
The auction catalogue of a major portion of one of the outstanding French bibliophiles of the epoch. Charron was the brother-in-law of Colbert. He significantly enhanced his library by acquiring virtually the entire Bibliotheca Thuana (except for those lost purchased on the first day of sale by bishop Huet and P.-D. Verthamon). The major part of this acquisition was eventually sold to Cardinal Rohan-Soubise, upon whose death it passed to the Prince de Soubise. The remainder of Charron's library was inherited by his two daughters, who sold it to the Dutch trade. It was offered at auction by them through the most important Dutch auctioneer of his time, Abraham De Hondt. Taylor, p. 20 and elsewhere; Blogie IV, col. 9.
