A Large Black Stone Stele of Vishnu
Northeastern India, Pala Period, circa 12th Century
Well carved in openwork standing on a double-lotus throne supported by Garuda, flanked by scrolls of foliage, three devotees, a donor figure and Ganesha, the upper hands holding a wheel and staff and a lotus in his lower right, wearing a short dhoti secured with an elaborate sash and foliate collar, flanked by the two goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi, over-arched by his avatars encircled by scrollwork on the throneback
