Crawling on his hands and knees atop a lotus base, with playful expression, arched eyebrows and wide open eyes, holding a disk-shaped piece of butter in his raised right hand, wearing a sash, ankle and wrist bracelets, necklace, and floret crown inset with turquoise and red hardstones, the base lacquered red on the upper side

Lot Essay

While a popular subject in South India, where Krishna is frequently depicted as a joyfully dancing boy holding a prized ball of butter after successfully raiding his mother's larder, this is a very rare and charming Nepalese depiction.
