Meera

The painting is a depiction of the 16th century Rajasthani Bhakti poet, Mirabai, who wrote songs of her deepest longing and love for Lord Krishna. She is one among the many historical and mythological personalities that have inspired Husain. He renders Mirabai here as a powerful iconic image of a woman singing in total devotion with her tanpura. The lamp, a recurring motif in Husain's work, is used here as a symbol of her steadfast bhakti.
