Lot Essay

In the early 1980's, A. Ramachandran visited the Bhil villages around Udaipur shifting his previously metropolitan focus to paint the tribal culture of Rajasthan. His paintings, which fill the entire canvas in their thickly decorative patterns, are often reminiscent of the intricate styles seen in Indian miniatures. In Roski as a Young Bride, Ramachandran uses his talented skills as a draftsman to link the figure of Roski with her environment. Through careful manipulation of line and pattern, the curves of her figure, body, hands and clothing begin to mimic those of the dense foliage surrounding her, creating a symbiotic and unified relationship between the human figure and nature.
