Lot Essay
Figuration has almost entirely dissolved in this late painting of Maqbool Fida Husain. Much like the work of Wassily Kandinsky, Husain has deconstructed his figures and landscapes almost to the point of abstraction, each form suggesting many possible objects, situations or emotions but committing to none. Yet, even in spite of its ambiguous subject matter, the shapes, colors and composition of this work maintain a remarkably strong sense of Husain's style and Indian identity.
