Lot Essay

Following his graduation in 1873 from the Istituto di Belle Arti, Naples, Mancini shared a studio with Vincenzo Gemito. Both artists were at the forefront of the Italian Verisimo movement, and Mancini spent some years painting the urchins, musicians and dancers of Naples in an uncompromising manner. It is likely that the present work, with its sombre and sensual palette, dates from this early part of his career.
