80 (159 x 95 mm). Collation: *4 (title, dedication to the consuls and senate of Frankfurt), A-B8 (essay in praise of the Frankfurt Fair); c-i8 k4 (Latin poems and translations from the Greek, mostly concerning drunkenness, one a satire on a horse for sale at the fair). Printer's woodcut device on title. (Some staining.) 18th-century English half sheep (worn). Provenance: A.N.L. Munby (bookplate, Sotheby's 22 March 1976, lot 164).

RARE FIRST EDITION of Estienne's famous encomium of the Frankfurt Fair, which he had recently attended for the first time in order to seek new markets for his stock, including the slow-moving Greek Thesaurus (see previous lot). The trade fair did not only offer books, but every possible commodity, all colorfully described. Estienne ends by paying tribute to Germany, the nation that gave the world the art of printing.
