LA CROIX DU MAINE, François Grudé de (1552-92). Premier volume de la bibliothèque du sieur de La Croix-Dumaine. Qui est un catalogue général de toutes sortes d'Autheurs, qui ont escrit en François. Paris: Abel L'Angelier, 1584.
Royal 20 (405 x 265 mm). Publisher's woodcut device on title, woodcut portrait of Henri III (dedicatee) on verso, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials, full-page woodcut of a bookcase of the type found in the author's library (p. 511). (Some staining.)
Mid-18th-century gold-tooled French red morocco binding, triple fillet on sides, floral and other small tools in compartments of spine, olive morocco lettering piece, roll-tooled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, (rebacked, original decorated spine-strip preserved). Provenance: César de Missy (ownership entry dated 1745, extensive autograph bibliographical notes in the margins of more than 20 pages), poet, editor and translator -- Etched armorial bookplate (dated 1802) -- Florencio Gavito, Vizconde de la Alborada y de Vilarrubio (bookplate).
LARGE-PAPER ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST FRENCH NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY. The author promises in his dedication a second and third volume (subject index and Latin works by French authors), but neither was published. ASSOCIATION COPY from the fine library of the Rev. César de Missy (or Caesar De-Missy), who was a tireless annotator of his books, which were sold at auction in London (Baker & Leigh, 18th March 1776). It shows the bibliography in active use until Rigoley de Juvigny published his revised edition, combining the works of La Croix du Maine and Du Verdier (see next lot). The woodcut of an elegant bookcase, which La Croix recommended for a Royal library, appears to be the first illustration of library furniture in a printed book. Breslauer and Folter 29.
