SAINTE-MARTHE, Abel de (1626-1707, the younger). Discours au Roy sur le rétablissement de la Bibliothèque Royale de Fontainebleau. [Paris: privately printed], 1668.
4o (240 x 175 mm). Collation: A-B4 C2 (title and text addressed to the King); 2A-C4 (documents on the history of the Fontainebleau library). Two engraved emblematic headpieces by Landry, one engraved tailpiece and initial. Contemporary gold-tooled red morocco, triple fillets on sides, large fleur-de-lys tool in the corners, two smaller sizes of fleur-de-lys tools in the compartments of spine, tooled turn-ins and board-edges, gilt leaf-edges, marbled endpapers. Provenance: a member of the Royal household (this privately published appeal to the King was presumably presented by the Fontainebleau librarian to various members of the Royal household, suitably bound in fleurdelisé morocco) -- Robert Hoe (1839-1909), bookplate, Anderson Galleries sale, part II, New York 1912, lot 2962.
RARE FIRST EDITION. Sainte-Marthe, who had succeeded his father as Royal librarian and carried the title of Conseiller du Roi en ses Conseils et en sa Cour des Aides, describes the origin, development and dissipation of the Royal library at Fontainebleau and pleads for its re-establishment, a revival and enforcement of copyright deposit, and a transfer of duplicates from other Royal libraries to Fontainebleau. The appeal, however, was in vain. FINE COPY. The treatise is not discussed in Histoire des bibliothèques françaises (ed. C. Jolly, 1988). Cioranescu 61249; BBB Wittockiana 5.
