OXFORD, Bodleian Library -- Thomas HYDE (1636-1703). Catalogus impressorum librorum Bibliothecae Bodlejanae in Academia Oxoniensi. Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, [1673-]1674.
Super royal 2o (428 x 276 mm), 2 parts bound in one volume. Complete, with errata-leaf at the end. Publisher's engraved device on title, engraved headpieces (college founders) and initials.
ORIGINAL OXFORD PRESENTATION BINDING: gold-tooled night-blue turkey, covers panelled with double fillets and a floral roll, triple tulip tool at the angles, compartments of spine densely tooled with the same roll, red morocco lettering piece, roll-tooled board-edges and turn-ins, gilt leaf-edges, marbled pastedowns, (rubbed in places, corners bumped). Provenance: John Evelyn (1620-1706, diarist, man of letters, bibliophile), inscribed to him on behalf of Oxford University by its Vice-Chancellor, Ralph Bathurst, in ten lines of Latin verse on flyleaf facing title, dated 31st December 1673; autograph note of catalogue entry and his Greek motto on the same page; autograph addition of eight titles to the printed list of his own works on p. 235 -- John Evelyn, the diarist's son (1655-99); a brief note of René Rapin's poem on gardens, of which his English translation had appeared in 1672 (Wing 0-268) -- Evelyn Library sale, Christie's London, 15 March 1978, lot 1117.
IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY ON LARGE PAPER OF THE THIRD BODLEIAN LIBRARY CATALOGUE, in a Restoration binding attributed to Roger Bartlett (the floral roll appears to be his), who bound both for the University and several colleges. The recipient, John Evelyn (virtuoso, author of Sculptura 1662 and Sylva 1664), had left Balliol without a degree, and sent his son to Trinity College under Dr. Bathurst, who has signed the inscription. Evelyn's private library was one of the finest in England, bibliophile in aspect with much gold-tooled red morocco from Paris; it counted a number of books that were partly issued on fine or special paper, then a fairly recent phenomenon in England.
"The extraordinary growth of the Bodleian Library since the publication in 1635 of Rouse's Appendix to James's 1620 catalogue, resulted in the great third catalogue of the Library, by Thomas Hyde, Bodley's Librarian and eminent orientalist, which became one of the most valuable reference works available to scholars for many years to come. For the first time manuscripts are not included" (Breslauer and Folter 69). "We must ascribe even more influence to Thomas Hyde's catalogue of 1674, which was the only institutional catalogue that Jean Mabillon would set beside the great French catalogues of private libraries. The Bibliothèque Mazarine interleaved Hyde's catalogue for use as its own" (Taylor pp. 158-159). Wing 0-864; Pollard and Ehrman 318.
