BOUND FOR MARTIN BRESLAUER BY MARIA LüHR: scarlet morocco, gilt arms of Napoleon on front cover, those of Marie-Louise on back cover, gilt-lettered spine, blue silk liners, edges gilt, original wrappers bound in. Matching slipcase. Provenance: Martin Breslauer (typed letter signed by Hans Fürstenberg laid in, thanking him for his presentation copy on Japan paper with inscription) -- Hans Fürstenberg (1890-1982, collector of bindings, German literature, and 18th-century French illustrated books), who bought the author's copy from his son, as he had lost the presentation copy in the Second World War -- B.H. Breslauer, who repurchased it shortly before Fürstenberg's death.

Martin Breslauer rediscovered Napoleon's second library, which was greatly extended by his widow, in an Archducal Palace at Vienna in 1929, where it had gone by inheritance and been forgotten. Hans Fürstenberg (later Jean Furstenberg) was at that time chairman of the Friends of the Prussian State Library, chief promoter of the exhibition of which this is the catalogue, and author of Napoleon als Büchersammler (1931). Maria Lühr (1874-1969) was the foremost German woman binder of her time.
