BRESLAUER, Bernard H. (1910-2004). The Uses of Bookbinding Literature. New York: Meriden-Stinehour Press at Lunenburg, Vermont, for Columbia University, Book Arts Press, 1986.

8o (230 x 150 mm). Edition limited to 1,000 copies. BOUND FOR PRESENTATION TO THE AUTHOR BY ROGER DEVAUCHELLE, in the year of publication (two autograph notes signed, laid in): gold- and blind-tooled cherry short-grain morocco to a Second Empire design, longitudinal lettering on spine, gilt edges. Slipcase.

The most reliable short guide in an acknowledged minefield, written with characteristic verve. Devauchelle's binding is a successful pastiche of French late-Romantic design. Breslauer was a regular client of Devauchelle, who is the most accomplished of all restorers, owning thousands of tools from the old stocks of Thouvenin, Gruel and Mercier. BBB Harvard 72.
