Lot Essay

This jade carving may represent either the sun or the moon, rising from waves and rocks. Both the sun and the moon are two of the twelve designated symbols of the Emperor. Compare a similar jade carving, illustrated by Liu Liang Yu, Chinese Jade: A New Approach, Taipei, 1992, p. 396.
