A SMALL WHITE JADE PIERCED FINIAL
YUAN/EARLY MING DYNASTY, 13TH-15TH CENTURY
Pierced and carved with two deer on one side, three cranes on the other and a small tortoise amidst pine, paulownia, bamboo and lingzhi fungus; together with a white jade carving of two double gourds growing on a leafy scrolling vine, with a butterfly on the larger gourd, 18th century; and a white jade carving of a peach with a bat on one side

Lot Essay

A similarly carved finial with four cranes standing in water amidst lotus and reeds, also dated to the Yuan/Ming dynasty, and formerly in a private Japanese collection, was included in the 75th Anniversary Exhibition of Post-Archaic Chinese Jades from Private Collections, S. Marchant & Son, London, 2000, no. 44.
